Provincial Affordable Housing Strategy
Affordable housing in Alberta
The Government of Alberta has primary responsibility for the province’s affordable housing system. Affordable housing includes government-owned or supported housing provided by the public, non-profit and private sectors for people unable to obtain or maintain housing through the private market due to financial, social or other circumstances.
A new affordable housing strategy for Alberta
The Government of Alberta is developing a strategy to improve the affordable housing system and ensure it will be there for Albertans in the future. Strategy development included stakeholder engagement through regional meetings and public input through an on-line survey. Stakeholders were asked to evaluate the regional meetings and an evaluation summary report has been prepared.
Review of Alberta Housing Act regulations
The strategy is being developed in tandem with a review and update of Alberta Housing Act regulations that govern how affordable housing is delivered and administered. Stakeholders have indicated the regulations need changes and updates. Stakeholders completed a questionnaire in September 2016 to provide feedback on desired changes and updates.
Input from the regional meetings, on-line survey and regulation questionnaire will be reviewed and used to develop a draft strategy for the government’s consideration. The goal is to have a Provincial Affordable Housing Strategy in place by the spring of 2017. Please check back with this page for ongoing developments.
