Items not funded — Special Needs Assistance for Seniors (SNA) Program

The SNA program does NOT normally fund these expenses:
  • Appliances — air conditioner, dishwasher, entertainment centres (DVD/Stereo/VCR players), freezer, trash compactor
  • Debt
  • Farming, business, or rental expenses
  • Furniture — with the exception of a bed and a television, funding is not provided for any kind of furniture such as:  tables, chairs, bookcases, recliners, dressers, etc.
  • Home repairs — as of July 1, 2016, the SNA program no longer funds home repairs.
  • Insurance 
  • Legal or professional fees — Read the list 
  • Medical expenses — Read the list 
  • Moving expenses
  • Other services — dry cleaning
  • Recreation or entertainment — Read the list 
  • Repairs needed as a result of flood, fire, wind etc. That would normally be covered by insurance.
  • Servicing lots — the program will not assist with the cost of bringing utility services to a property or into the house.
  • Vehicle expenses — the program will not assist with the cost of vehicle payments, leases, vehicle repairs or driver's tests.

Legal or professional fees

The following legal/professional fees are not funded by the SNA program:

  • Accountants
  • Income tax preparation
  • Lawyers
  • Power of Attorney, Personal Directives
  • Wills

Medical expenses

Although some basic health supports may be funded, the following medical expenses are not funded by the SNA program:

  • Acupuncture
  • Avastin injections
  • Bandages, casts, braces, splints
  • Blood pressure monitors
  • Chelation therapy
  • Chiropractor
  • Day Support Programs
  • Dental — contact Dental Assistance for Seniors program
  • Eye glasses — contact Optical Assistance for Seniors program
  • Hearing aids — contact Alberta Aids to Daily Living program
  • Hearing aid batteries
  • Incontinence supplies — contact Alberta Aids to Daily Living program
  • Massage therapy
  • Medical equipment (for example, Broda chairs, alarm mats)
  • MRIs or other health procedures that an individual has chosen to pay for
  • Natural health products (herbal products, homeopathic preparations, and vitamin/mineral supplements)
  • Optical eye surgery or lens implants
  • Oxygen supplies — contact Alberta Aids to Daily Living program
  • Physiotherapy
  • Scooters
  • Synvisc, Neovisc,  Orthovisc
  • Walkers, wheelchairs (manual or motorized) — contact the Alberta Aids to Daily Living program

Recreation and entertainment

The following recreation and entertainment expenses are not funded by the SNA program:

  • Alcohol
  • Bingo, lotteries
  • Books, newspapers, magazines, subscriptions
  • Celebrations, parties
  • Computers, mobile devices, tablets
  • Donations — charity or church
  • Exercise equipment/classes/fees
  • Gifts
  • Membership fees
  • Movie and theatre tickets
  • Pet supplies
  • Restaurant meals
  • Television or internet subscriptions
  • Tobacco, cigarettes
  • Vacations, trips
